VPC Went Vegas Day 1: Amsterdamned

Sometimes I like to take the time and enjoy the fact that now is now. One of those moments occurs while staring at the empty freeway in front of me this Wednesday night the 17th. In about ten days I’m stuck in traffic on this exact spot on my way to some boring meeting. But not now. Now I’m on my way to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport with the prospect of an eight day Las Vegas trip right ahead of me. Baars, Hugo & and my girlfriend are all heavily occupied on their phones as the freeway slides underneath us. In ten days I’ll be looking back at this moment. By then, I happily trade one or two testicals to turn the clock back ten days. However, no need to be giving away balls just yet. Because now is now. And now is awesome.

We are on our way to Amsterdam this Wednesday night because we have a 10 o’clock flight towards Houston in the morning. That leaves very little wiggle room for Dutch Railroad failures. We would have to catch the 5AM train in Venlo and have zero setbacks to make the flight. No need to start gambling that early on in the trip. For basically the cost as a one-way train ticket we booked rooms at the Ibis Hotel near Schiphol and they will shuttle us to the airport in the morning. Easy game.

With the hotel being located at an uneventful industrial zone I would have preferred arriving around midnight but I can’t let the misses drive back in the middle of the night so we started this 100 minute drive around nine in the evening. It’s my first time staying at this Ibis Hotel but I can smell trouble once I see the bar area when I walk in around 22:30.

I’ve checked in to the hotel online so I only need to pick-up the key card and drop my suitcase in the room before making my way to the bar. I had changed my ‘no drinking’ plan to a ‘one or two drinks’ plan on the way to Amsterdam since plan A was unacceptable to travel companion Hugo. Within ten minutes the six of us are the loudest party at the bar. Verkus Wum is still on his way as he went to Amsterdam early to ‘watch Netflix’ with some girl. Damvic will be gambling on the early morning train as he only found out yesterday we we’re headed for Vegas on Thursday, not Friday…

It all fun and games until Hugo wants to address the roommate situation. Like a miracle we got rid of the Bozzie No Balls Tax situation by combining the Expedia travel plans of Bozzie and Hugo last-minute. No Omaha flips needed to decide who gets the single rooms as we only have four rooms now. Hugo isn’t happy with the fact Bozzie claimed Iebus as a roommate and that he’s stuck with VPC Diva Damvic. And when things don’t go Hugo’s way you best be sure trouble is on the way.

After 30 minutes of heated discussion we are flipping for the roommate situation. Much to the dismay of everyone except Hugo. The biggest risk by far is drawing Verkus Wum’s number. No one except Jelzo knows Wum very well and from what we’ve seen in Namur a couple of months ago there is a decent change Wum will be pissing in your ear at 5 in the morning on a regular basis. The draw concludes:

Jelle – Wum
Iebus – Hamid
Bozzie – Hugo
Baars – Damvic

Not the worst draw but Iebus already vetoed bunking with me since he resents the fact that I get up before 12 in the afternoon. A swap is made and I bunk with Baars which was the original plan anyway. All the roommate discussion made us thirsty and we are well into our fifth pint when the ‘last call’ seems to save us from a big hangover around 1AM. Verkus Wum made his way to Ibis by now after a 2,5 hours bus, tram & taxi tour through Amsterdam.

On our way towards bed few us head out for a nightcap cigarette. When we walk back in we see the boys found a fridge with ice cold Heineken bottles in the hotel lobby. Like idiots we start knocking back these bitches till 03:30 and I already hate myself when my head hits the pillow dreaming away about the Vegas trip to come. Should have stuck with plan A. or B.
